Monday distraction: Quizup
0Over the weekend, it seems like everyone I follow on Twitter has gotten addicted to the iOS trivia game Quizup. (https://twitter.com/quizup)
I feel a little guilty sharing it, like I'm telling you about this new form of crack or something, but at least it is a quick game. It's pretty basic - just multiple-choice image-based trivia. Like a lot of other games that have recently caught on, I think it's spreading so fast because it's so easy to find match-ups and share how you're doing. And, of course, it's got badges and leveling up.
Anyway, just in the interest of sharing what's getting passed around.

ooh, web culture category sounds interesting, will have to check this out later.
Main problem with having the individual categories is that it doesn't take more than a few games into one before you're seeing repeat questions. And then you figure anyone you're playing might just know the answers from playing more than you.
So, nice interface, but not much long term playability.
My current form of crack is Plants vs Zombies 2. Although I am about to burn out on it as they make some levels ridiculously hard to make you use the power-ups and spend your coins, which you can either grind endlessly to replace or buy with cash. The thing I like best about PvZ is the strategic play. Planning your defense, maximizing your resources, using creative interactions between weapons, establishing your line and watching to see how the strategy plays out. I like the PC version best with the Survival modes. I dislike the PvZ2 Power-ups where strategy is frequently forced to yield to reaching in the game and squishing zombies with your fingers.
Yeah, I downloaded PvZ2, but it being free oddly kept me from getting very into it, because I assumed they'd basically force me to spend money later. Wish there was just a one-time $5 you-get-everything option.
@dave I've been playing quizup this week and I like it as long as I switch up the categories frequently. Nice find! Surprised by how many repeat questions there are though. What are your favorite categories?
@halesyeah Yeah, I basically play till I'm level 10 and then have to not play or it's too many repeats. I'm at 11 on Web Culture, 10 on Brands, Logos, Baseball, and World Countries. Then still playing spelling, math: hard, name the flag, tabletop games, US States.
It is nice how many categories there are. Even switching it up a lot you can still play for a long time. And it's impressive that there's almost always someone to match up with you.
@dave US States, World Countries, Logos, and Name the Flag seem to be my top. I realized quickly that I totally suck at Paintings and Nintendo Titles. Seems like they are adding new ones fairly often so luckily I won't have to struggle through any that I don't like.
I was surprised to see that they are doing a "Remembering JFK" section. Haven't tried it yet, but might be interesting.
@halesyeah I tried Entrepreneurs, because, well, but yeah that was basically random guessing. General knowledge was surprisingly hard.
It looks like they let people submit questions. That's been fine mostly, though I did get one where I reported it as wrong. (They said "mum" was not a palindrome.)
@dave the trick to moving up in General Knowledge is just to play against certain friends that are not as smart/fast as you are :)
