@fgarriel, so on the battery, instead of a standard female USB plug you want a retractable male micro-usb end?
I bought one of these (http://www.woot.com/offers/11-200-mah-portable-battery-pack-charger-1) (I know gasp yes I bought something from woot) and the power button broke off of it. I may open it up to see if I can rig it to work again -- maybe I can hardwire in a cable, but I hadn't considered that a pressing need I guess.
So I'm looking for an external, portable battery that's at least 5000mAh, has an integrated micro-usb male connector, and will fit in a large pocket (note: I consider the Nintendo 3DS XL to be the maximum size for a pocket, though most people think smaller).
I don't want to carry a charged battery, a phone, and the cable. Odds of me having all three in my pocket are not very high. Build the connector into the battery and I'm sold.
Searching for such a thing is frustrating. There's gold waiting to be mined when that puzzle is solved.
I think @shawn found and explored working with these guys a while back https://www.semantics3.com - they aren't doing what you ask exactly but they probably have the best database to build better semantic tools on top of. I believe they are Y-combinator backed, so hopefully a more-stable-than-most type of startup that'll keep maturing.
@snapster, It's probably not a big deal to have the plug integrated. My use case for an integrated cable boils down to vacations with family.
On days where I'm in the air, it's nice to not have in-flight battery anxiety when I want to use battery sucking maps/gps at my destination. With a large enough battery I could juice up a tablet for kids or keep my phone going from morning, through flight, on for GPS to hotel, and still have power to pull up my reservation.
The next day I'm going to be taking & sharing pictures like crazy. The screen is on a lot, the photos are being auto-backed up to Google, and I'm doubling the upload by sharing them on Facebook. The battery in my pocket is fine, but the cables I have are longer than is really necessary. This leads to messy pockets. I'm in-and-out of my pockets all day when I'm there - napkins, bills/change, endless receipts. One less thing in my pocket to find, lose or store is a good thing.
A 6-12" cable velcro'd to the battery would be nearly as good of a solution as an integrated cable.
@snapster, I almost bought that, but the other item in my cart sold out before I could get it.
@fgarriel, I bought it immediately upon my realization that it came with an apple lightning adapter.. at $29 with this adapter it was $10 more than the adapter at Apple. Unfortunately, it ended up being a crappy 3rd party adapter that doesn't always work. So now I have a crappy adapter and a broken battery. I guess I'm the strange type of consumer that doesn't feel burned by that sort of thing - it'll be a cool item to take apart and learn from. I'm sure I can add batteries to some other device that runs on DC power.
Well this is embarrassing... All I had to do was scroll farther down Anker's product page to find what I was looking for. In my defense, they didn't make the integrated cable feature obvious in their primary stock photo.
