Some mediocre stats, aka: who are you people?
12It’s always fun to see who ends up visiting your site, and it’s interesting to try to discern demographics from the data you get in analytics. Like this:
Looking at visits to the mediocre.com site (including the home page & the forum) over the last week or so:
Browsers:
51.5% Chrome (Wow, a flat out majority)
18.0% Safari (I assume this includes mobile Safari)
10.7% not set (I wonder what this mostly is)
10.4% Firefox
4.1% Internet Explorer (I’ll be honest, I love seeing this so low.)
1.8% in-app Safari (Hadn’t realized they broke this out)
1.6% Android browser (I don’t know enough to know when Chrome started taking over here)
OS:
37.0% Windows (almost entirely Chrome I’d guess.)
31.8% Mac (and a fair amount of Chrome users on Mac)
12.3% iOS (iPhone & iPad)
11.2% not set
5.3% Android (Absurdly low considering the market share)
2.1% Linux (year of the desktop!)
…
0.1% Blackberry (Aw.)
Mobile:
Weekday: 83.0% desktop, 13.8% phone, 3.2% tablet
Weekend: 76.4% desktop, 13.0% phone, 10.6% tablet (iPads are for the weekend)
And then out of that phone + tablet %:
50.5% iPhone (again, an actual majority is surprising to see)
16.3% iPad (lower than I’d have guessed, I wonder if the new mini will affect this)
6.3% not set
3.6% Google Nexus 4
2.0% Barnes and Noble BNTV600 Nook HD+ Tablet (huh! Well above the Kindle Fire, though it’s a fairly small sample size so far.)
…
58 more Android devices, 23 of which are Samsung
It’ll be cool to see how this changes over time. (And how it’ll change immediately after Christmas. I suspect the tablet % is going to eventually get quite a bit bigger.)
Any other things you'd like me to look up? Any of you run sites and want to share your % numbers for comparison?

Hmm, I figured there'd be a lot more iUsers on a site called mediocre.com. ;-)
Time to set my UserAgent to Netscape 3.01 gold!
What color are my eyes?
Mostly brown, but if you look really close, there's a green speckling. (You might not have noticed, check again.)
@dave, I've really got to put a bandaid on my computer camera.
Top ten cities so far:
Did we cover where you are?
Nope, but now that I know the forum is live, maybe I can make the metro-Detroit area pop up on your next list.
@dave are you thinking device share vs. use share on iOS/Andriod? I think use share is still slightly in iOS favor on the net in general.
@snapster, right, this is inline with the thought that many people who have Androids (and particularly the ones available free on contract) don't use them as smart phones, but more as feature phones, but this is still a greater spread than I've seen elsewhere.
Nook HD+ here. I doubt my thriving metropolis of ~1200 people will ever make your top 10 list.
@dave, I'm using Chromium as the browser on my Linux desktop (Arch). Would that qualify as "not set"?
What are you, the NSA?
We can neither confirm nor deny that we know everything you have ever done and will ever do.
I'm guessing that my hits register as San Fran, despite being in Phila. I believe this simply because all the "HORNY MOMS IN <[ip_lookup_city]> WANT TO CLIP YOUR COUPONS" ads tell me that's where I am.
I'm a Firefox user. Not a big fan of Chrome for desktops, always surprises me when I see their stats so high. I don't understand what makes Chrome superior to Firefox is so many peoples' eyes. Anyone want to try to explain it to me?
speed
minimalism. The content > The browser
integration with gmail and other google apps
I'm getting my first android this weekend. Should know how to use it by this time next year.
If Chrome is slow try Dolphin. Chrome works great on my MotoX but not my Nexus.
@dave, nope, but close enough...
Thanks for sharing. I always enjoy nerdstats
@dave, Yep.
I bet that 4.1% IE is from BrowserStack...
In my purely anecdotal experience, a lot of people who have iphones tend to use them as their primary internet access, while a lot of the android users are people who are on thier computers a lot of the time.
@dave, Gee golly! I figured Bluff City, TN would be higher on that list! :)
@capguncowboy, Your visits to date represent 0.04% of the total! Well, you and the rest of that Bluff City crowd that's hanging out here.
That's actually impressive when you consider there are less than 1000 residents in Bluff City unless you are going by my ISP
@dave: how is Glens Falls, NY fairing?
Hey, I'm in Schenectady! Scotia, actually.
@billlehecka - Hai neighbor!
bumping up the linux totals
@DJP519, I gave up on FF when it kept downloading with search hijackers. Hours of doing battle ending in a reset. I'm Chrome now.
Cincinnati?
What percentage of us are still logged into Facebook when browsing Mediocre?
Hey, I'm in Poland, why didn't I show up on the list?
@edlada, You're in the 16th most popular country to visit us! There is a 41.7% chance you're in Krakow. But based on account creation events, I might guess...Poznan?
@TheAlmighty1, I'm pretty sure they don't have a facebook plugin or else Ghostery would throw up a flag. As far as I can tell it's only Google Analytics.
@dave, Poznan is close but I am about 100 miles to the west of Poznan, right over the border from Germany and 100 miles from Berlin. Probably my IP address shows Poznan. Sheesh, the 16th most popular country. C'mon Poland, represent!
@edlada, Poland's the 33rd most populous country, so you're at least doing better per capita. It would only take a half dozen friends to beat out Italy on the list.
Anybody else in Maine? Wanna get a coffee?
I guess you like iced coffee?
I don't like iced coffee. I do like iced water however, especially when dripping from absolutely everything!
