The Amazon Fire Phone - Yay, nay, meh?
3
Seems like Amazon is dipping their toes into a lot of new ground (is that right?) lately. On the heels of the recently announced Fire TV comes the Fire Phone.
I think the most interesting feature is the Firefly functionality, though I've never seen that kind of technology work as well as they're claiming.
Dynamic perspective doesn't interest me all that much, but I'd have to play around with it to see how much it matters.
I couldn't care less about Mayday, if given the choice I'll choose text or email support every time.
So what do you think, does the Amazon phone matter? Do you want one?

If I know Amazon, they're going to have Amazon's version of apps, without access to the Google Play store -- or 3rd party apps. I'm sure it will be just like the tablet, but with phone abilities. "Rooting" it will likely result in a voided warranty.
When it breaks, you probably won't have the option of going to a local hub and exchanging it. You'll have to mail it back.
I have zero interest in their phone. I can get the "free app of the day" on my current Android phone. I don't need to tie myself down to someone's system to do that.
No interest in a $650 unlocked phone. $200 unlocked, works on multiple carriers and maybe I'll be interested.
Just what I was looking for, a more efficient and effective way to be a good little American Amazonian consumer.
The new stuff they put in is gimmicky at best. This phone offers nothing exciting to the market right now.
oh boy!
It's possible 3rd party developers could come up with fun / interesting / innovative stuff for the Firefly button and the Dynamic Perspective. It's smart of Amazon to open that up out of the gate.
But their built-in uses seem pretty lame/gimmicky, and I don't know if they'll get enough of a market share to make it worth it for developers.
/me waits for @shawn to show up and make a Steve Ballmer joke
@harrison, did you know Steve Ballmer's email got hacked?
Just what I wanted in a phone - the unpleasant Android user experience without any of the Google services that make it bearable to use. At least it will be easier to buy things with my phone, unless of course those things are apps, which will be few and far between.
It looks pretty cool to me, but I'm not going to join ATT for it. The price is a bit much too...
I lost interest when I saw the words "AT&T exclusive."
I'm actually considering and willing to switch carriers from Verizon but I don't think AT&T would be where I would want to go.
I kinda respect the T-Mobile CEO for some of the crazy shit he's said but is that a reason to go with them? Maybe?
I don't know, thinking about telecom companies is exhausting.
I'm with T-Mobile because I prefer to have a fair price / BYOP structuring.
I might check it out. Play with it. If it comes loaded with ads like the Kindle fire, no way. I dumped that for a samsung tablet for that reason. That, and their anemic android build is WAY to restricted. Their browser was crap and I couldn't loaf a different one.
I'm among the Amazon sheeple, however, I liked the integration with Amazon services, especially Amazon Prime - which the bastards refuse to release for other Android platforms.
Just what we need...another smartphone.
