The Nerd/Geek Corner: Gurren Lagann, Rick and Morty, and the Future of Nintendo
1Hi, everyone. It's nerdy/geeky/adventure time. On the board for today:
Gurren Lagann
So, I just finished Attack on Titan (or what was available on Netflix), and I want to rewatch Gurren Lagann. Anyone know a legal streaming location or a cheap place to buy the series? I haven't seen it in years, and I've been on a kick of rewatching great animes - like FLCL, which is on Toonami right now.
Rick and Morty
According to Vulture, Dan Harmon's new show Rick and Morty beat out Archer in ratings among men under 35. Has anyone seen it? I've watched a few episodes and I haven't exactly fallen in love yet. That said, Archer took an episode or two to grow on me.
Nintendo
Nintendo's had a rough year, and says they're committed to hardware production. Do you think they can pull it together after the last few disasters? I'd hate to see Nintendo get out of the hardware business, but I haven't owned a non-handheld Nintendo console since the Gamecube (I have a 3DS).

I really enjoy my Nintendo WiiU!! I did think the pad controller was stupid though, until I used it. Now I think it's a great addition to the system.
I know Nintendo is convinced that as long as they have a following in Mario and Zelda games that they are safe... I sort of agree (I love Mario and Zelda!), but honestly at the end of the day my WiiU gets used the most for Netflix and playing this YouTube video--over and over again-- for my daughter:
And really so many other technologies could fulfill those services for me. Sad day. My favorite system was the N64. It had so many great games and was just fun to play.
I'm really enjoying Rick & Morty, but I haven't yet seen the last two episodes, which @lukeduff tells me are the best ones. I did read it just got renewed for another season.
For those who don't know about the show, it's clearly supposed to be the other adventures of Marty & Doc from Back To The Future, changed just enough to be legal. It's, uh, not for kids.
@girlgonemild, I was very tempted to get a Wii U when they released the HD remake of Wind Waker, but I just couldn't justify buying a system for one game.
@dave, I've heard that Meeseeks and Destroy is the best Rick and Morty episode, but I haven't had a chance to see it yet. Adult Swim streams it, but my cable provider isn't on their "Gold" list.
It still totally bewilders me that Nintendo somehow missed that the Wii controller and activity games got tons of people playing that would never consider themselves console gamers.
The Wii U looks like the successor to the GameCube (which was generally considered a flop) not the Wii (which made tons and tons of money).
I still think they could just do a simple Wii 2 that supported 1080p / widescreen / hdmi and possibly had a little bump in processing power and they'd sell way better than the Wii U has.
@ohjonnyboy, Adult Swim uploads the episodes to YouTube too. I watch them via Chromecast that way.
@Ignorant, Oh, awesome. Thanks!
@dave, I'll never get Nintendo's roller coaster with consoles, especially given how many people are rooting for them. I really want them to succeed in the hardware business, but I just can't find a reason to buy one of their newer consoles. I like my 3DS and the games are perfect for a handheld, but they just haven't given me a reason to buy one of their new consoles.
That said, if they released a new console with HD support, a new Zelda (w/o the motion controls), and an interesting new IP, I'd probably scoop it up in a heartbeat.
