@Ignorant I think this is was a smart move for both parties. Gives Nest the resources to get things moving faster. Any ideas on what product they will come out with next? Will Google go ahead and buy Belkin for WeMo?
They'll tie in the info they gather from my phone to tell when I'll be home. Then they'll make my house comfortable for me for when I get there and uncomfortable for my cat when I'm not home.
It's interesting, the group I'm around on Twitter mostly is thinking of this as bad news - concerns over privacy (despite Nest's assurance), or concerns that Nest will fall into Google's Black Hole and basically stop developing.
Sounds like there's a general sense here that this could be good news and a good move.
@dave i've been getting a lot of both sides from the people I follow on Twitter. The last thing I want is for Nest to fall into Google's black hole. Google can provide them the resources to continue to innovate and create more products. I just hope they don't mess up a good thing.
@Ignorant, I suppose it depends on how you judge, but yeah, there's definitely possibilities for them to essentially be funded but left alone.
I've spoken with people on the Keyhole / Google Earth team who feel fairly abandoned and shoved aside as Google Maps (bizarrely a totally separate team) incorporates most of their features and abilities, but on the other hand, it's not unlikely Keyhole would've shut down if they'd not been acquired (given the high cost they were having to charge for their product).
@dave, or worse... "< smoke detector trips at 5pm, followed by someone pressing the hush button > Smells like Mom burned dinner again. Navigating to Olive Garden."
@fgarriel, "It appears your house is on fire. We've contacted the Ugly House company who will sell even your now burned ruin husk of a house. Also, uh, don't panic but we've also checked into funeral arrangements. You know, just in case."
They've been working on the home automation thing for a long time now http://www.theverge.com/2012/2/27/2827615/android-home-automation-cloud-services-andy-rubin when they announced Android@Home it'd be fantastic if they can make it work and make it easy.

and somehow it'll manage to make my phone battery drain even faster

I feel like it's an opt-in sort of thing so I'm not sure it's much of an issue
@fgarriel, I do like to imagine that a prime goal of any home automation system you might install would be to torment your cat.
This made me laugh. My cat could give a flip.

I wonder if i'll have to join Google+ if I buy a Nest.
From our Chief Software Architect @lukeduff:
@dave, there are acquisitions that they've done good with and/or left alone: keyhole, Android, or Motorola Mobility come to mind.
personally, i'd just like it if they brought the price down to a non-Richie Rich level.
@carl669, Free, as long as you're ok with the smoke detectors periodically announcing advertisements based on habits your thermostat has picked up.

Ahh, I just figured maps was the same team as Keyhole :/
Article at The Verge discussing the general concern people are voicing on the acquisition, and an interview with the founder (and this relevant quote on their independence):
I'm surprised nobody has made a "feather their nest" joke yet......

True story. I tried to cook dinner last night and this happened:
