What kind of community do we want?
5Hi all,
I realize that our community is still small and tight-knit right now but @dave and I have been talking about an overall idea for the kind of place we want our forums to be. We want a community where we'd like to hang out and spend our time - as employees we’re stuck here, might as well enjoy it. Think of this as laying the basic groundwork for a larger community in the future.
With that in mind, here are a few guidelines/standards/ideals, what-have-yous that we came up with:
Don’t be a dick.
Follow Wheaton’s Law. Try to keep things civil, we encourage and admire passion but no one likes a jerk being a jerk just because. Be excellent to each other.
Be smart and/or funny.
We’re building a community full of people we like and enjoy hanging out with. We realize this “smart” and “funny” thing is insanely subjective, but we’re sticking with it. You’re welcome to make a dumb & boring community elsewhere.
Contribute.
When you post, add something to the conversation. It’s awesome that you want to tell us why something totally sucks, but you’ve got to tell us how and why. And if someone’s having trouble, help out.
If you think these ideas are stupid and/or have some of your own that you’d like to suggest please let me know. @dave and I are particularly interested in features and qualities of other online communities you really enjoy being a part of, I’m not above stealing borrowing good ideas.

Post Game Of Thrones Spoilers.
When you post, don't worry about the people who will cry. It's awesome that you are posting a spoiler and they know it.
New quest (for those brave enough to accept): Find a show that @snapster isn't caught up on and spoil it.
Cersei kills Dumbledore
Wouldn't that go directly against Wheaton's Law?
Are we allowed to give our opinions without fear of them being deleted if they're not in favor of you!? That other site doesn't allow that anymore.
What are the odds that they're actually be a list of rules? It's not that I think they're necessary right now, but if this community does grow, I can see how they may become necessary.
I also think it should be necessary to post humiliating photos of one another if we have them.
Not in favor of me, personality? I mean, everyone else already does it, so join the club (seriously, there's a club).
@capguncowboy For sure, if you're contributing your honest opinion we want to hear it - even if it's negative criticism.
We're still talking about the 'rules' we want to make and enforce. Like you, we think it'll be something necessary down the line but I wouldn't expect them to be very strict and they'll probably change while we continue to figure things out.
Take that back or your precious Squirtle gets it...
He has a point
Leave him out of this, he didn't do anything wrong! But do what you must, the community is more important than any single Squirtle.
That's terrible. You're worse than Gary.
@capguncowboy, you don't know how much I miss that. We stand by to be absorbing of all criticism and transparent on all rules. We reserve the right to argue back from time to time.
I love a good argument :)
There is a difference between constructive criticism and just plain negativity. But I think the core community will handle it.
Be Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent. Yep, that about covers it. (My work is done here.)
Ha, you're a nerd scout. Wait... I'm a nerd scout. DAMNIT!
I think between all of the Mediocre staff we possess at least 4 or 5 of these qualities!
Fun to think of a single activity that would break as many of these as possible. Stealing a friends dog and giving it a $500 dirt bath.
"Obedient"?
could we have at least 15% of the community required to demonstrate irreverence over reverence...would be more fun
@katylava, Obedient, as in "sit, stay, speak" and "You want me to jump how high?"
@denboy I missed "Reverent"... that's worse than "Obedient". Well, about the same.
I'm a nerd Eagle Scout. Where's my cookie?
Be useful. If you cannot be useful, be quiet.
Or some variation of that.
That's kind of the idea behind Contribute, but I like it. :)
I kind of like Deals from that other place; not the deals themselves but the "Where can I find," "What do you think about," "Has anybody used," "What the heck are they talking about," threads.
