Mediocre Deals of the Month, January 2014
8Ahoy, fellow mediocrities! Now that the Xmas gorge orgy (gorgy?) of consumerism has passed, this month's deals should be even more mediocre than last month's.
Once again, post links below to the limpest, most lifeless deals you can find on the Internet, and vote for your "favorites". Uninspiring product, underwhelming discount (or "free" bonus), and unjustified hype: that's what mediocre deals are made of.

Here's mine: a magical coupon code saves you a whopping 3% off Emirates Airlines fares. When you consider that pretty much every Emirates flight is routed via Dubai, the per-hour-in-the-air price is phenomenal! Why settle for a mere seven-hour flight from DC to London when you can get a forty-hour flight for 3% less?
I'm gonna donate a ~World Famous Dann Of Crap~ to whoever can come up with the most mediocre deal at the end of each month if it helps jump start this game- I like it!
My mediocre deal requires a little backstory and trust. I buy lots of Starbucks coffee at SAMs Club. For over a year, the 2 lb. bag has been $17.98. Last month, the price dropped to $14.98 per bag. It was well broadcast with those orange signs that say "NEW LOWER PRICE."
Now for the deal. This month the big orange "NEW LOWER PRICE" sign is next to a price tag of $16.98. http://www.samsclub.com/sams/starbucks-house-blend-whole-bean-32-oz/182155.ip?navAction=push
Only Walmart/SAMs can raise the price and call it lower...

You can get a free one-year membership to Experian's credit monitoring service. They lost your information and they're making up for it I guess, even if you can never undo it, short of changing your name and addresses.
Wow, I am profoundly underwhelmed by these deals. A $2 price increase on coffee, and a free year of credit monitoring from the people whose blunder made it necessary to monitor your credit? Mediocre work, everybody. Keep the mediocrity coming!
@CowboyDann, That incentive might be too good for this thread. But we'll take it anyway!
@JasonToon, Dont worry, My prizes will be much more mediocre [as if that's really even possible]
Here's one from me, Obviously I wont choose myself as the winner (also cause mine's not that good) I was at Fred Meyers last week and they still had a lot of left over chocolate for sale. big 3oz bars of hersheys and mr goodbars and stuff like that. They set up an endcap with a big font that said NOW 2.59!!! then in micro font it said Reg:$2.59
0.00 cents savings and it wasn't the first time I've seen this, walgreens and walmart did it too a few times in the past.
relive the 80s for only $26.91! be the trendsetter in your office. help bring back big hair, popped collars and cuffed jeans!

Maybe not exactly the spirit of this thread, but here's the biggest sticker shock I've gotten this week. Searching the web for a hat just like this (but imagining it'd run me, oh, maybe eight bucks?) I stumbled across Carhartt's "Work In Progress" line, which is new to me:
http://shop.carhartt-wip.com/us/men/accessories/beanies/I013441/camo-beanie
This is not an angora cap made somehow to look like acrylic. It's an acrylic knit cap. Like you might buy at a gas station. Except this one is $40. (Minimum order $100, $15 shipping.)
Apparently this is Carhartt's ploy to get people to imagine their regular old line of work clothes in a high fashion context... simply by charging ludicrous high-fashion prices for them.
If it works, you've got to hand it to them. It's an audacious strategy.

everything on that site broke my brain
Amazon's God Box Deal of the Day is a "Bowflex SelectTech 1090 Adjustable Dumbbell" for $210. I was curious if there were other opportunities to buy this on Amazon so I checked. Check out the ones sold by "ConvenienceBotique." They tried to undercut everyone else's pricing by offering this for $140 and $160....but they tacked on shipping costs of $236.70.
No commission on shipping costs. It used to be more frequent but Amazon started cracking down on it and regulating the shipping
@capguncowboy, Thanks for the info. That almost makes it even more non-sensical to me that they would charge that for shipping and not make commission on it...
Give Amazon your ~$36-ish product and they'll give you a $0.25 gift card. Oh wait, no, that's not right. Up to a $0.25 gift card:
For the low price of free, send your name for a round-trip ride to asteroid Bennu: http://www.planetary.org/get-involved/messages/bennu/
@iRattus, OK. My name will go to space once again. I sort of remember doing this once before.
Hmmmm... I actually have one for this. We were looking for an elliptical (new years- eh) and decided to stop in the Sears Outlet that we drove by. They had a floor model- dinged up, etc, at 40% off... Only $1150. But when I googled the model, it cost $1000-$1200- Sears was selling it new for $1079. So the deal was a custom model with one of a kind dents and scratches for the bargain price of $80.00 over the regular model.
I'm scared to respond to anybody's post directly or name any situations in fear of getting someones hope up ]for mediocre stuff of all things[ but there are some pretty fantastic ones in here.
Also I have no idea how i'm gonna pick a winner yet. I might consult a select lab rat to help me decide or i'll just draw straws, not. I'll probably just end up picking the deal that underwhelms the most
@Ldraney, I've seen this before at sams club. They mark down damaged items from their original price. then the item on the shelf goes on clearance and they don't adjust the price of the damaged item. i've had a manager tell me that they can't adjust the damaged one because they have to wait for approval from headquarters. It's dumb, but that is the reason why (at Sam's anyway.)
@jaybird, All these deals were so very underwhelming it was hard to choose a winner, but raising a price and then calling it lower is pretty terrible.
You win the prize of DannCrap. Feel Free to send me an email with the secret code and i'll work on mailing your crap out this weekend.
If February gets more than 10 submissions i'll donate another bag
I would shout for joy, but that isn't a very mediocre response. So, instead, I say thank you and I'll try to do worse next month.
Congrats @jaybird.
Got the mediocre "Cowboydann crap" today. Was fun opening and even more fun laughing at the truly random items and crap. My fave is the creamer container shaped like a cow. That will get plenty of use. Thanks Cowboy!
